A few months ago, I was chauffeuring my wife around to various stores and shops to run her errands. I actually enjoy doing this. I take a book and read while she goes in and takes care of business. I tease that I am her bodyguard. When she is finished, I am a mule, carrying things in the house.
One sunny afternoon, we returned home after her errands and pulled into the driveway. As we were getting out of the car, the car alarm started going off. I told her I must have bumped the fob, retrieved it from my pocket, and hit the alarm button, but it didn’t stop. I said, “Maybe I have to get all of the way out of the car.” Getting out I hit the alarm button on the fob again. But the alarm is still going off. I walk over to her side of the car, where she is standing in the yard and say to her, ”Maybe the battery in my fob is dead, try yours.”
There we are, middle of the afternoon, standing in the yard, hitting our fobs like something magical is about to happen. We started laughing and looking around to see if any of the neighbors were watching. I said, “Sometimes it sounds like it’s going off double, I’ll quit hitting my fob.” The wife continues trying hers and the alarm keeps sounding. Finally, I said, “Let’s go ahead and carry everything inside and I’ll try to figure out what’s going on while you are putting things away.”
As we carried things into the house, the sound changed a bit inside the entryway. It sounded more like it was coming from my truck than her car. I walked out to the truck, took the truck fob out of my pocket, hit the alarm button. Now all was quiet. No more alarm.
She came back outside and saw what had happened. I was laughing and said, “It was the truck all along, and we were turning the car alarm off and on, that’s why it sounded like it was going off double.” We just laughed and laughed and joked about how we were losing it. Thankful too, that it wasn’t late night or early morning!
